Jean-François Lyotard a reçu l'enseignement d'Emmanuel Levinas de plein fouet. Mais il l'a déplacé : alors que Totalité et infini en appelle à la transcendance de « l'autre homme », « celui qui fait entrer en moi ce qui n'entre pas », J.-F. Lyotard fait de l'« extériorité » l'opérateur abstrait d'une « effraction » qui affecte tous les champs de l'expérience, l'éthique mais aussi la politique. En ce sens, la dette de Lyotard envers l'éthique de Levinas donne lieu à un désaccord sur leurs conceptions respectives du politique.
